Dallas Perkins is a So Cal based musician whose specialty is modern melodic rock with soulful hooks and driving guitars. On his Unbecoming EP, Dallas throws four of his best shots at the listener. The result is an enthusiastic, potent rocking affair that made me wonder why this guy hasn't been signed to a major independent label. Perkins can shred, but he doesn’t over play. He shows the power of restraint and that proves to be just as much of an asset as his talent on guitar. His lyrics are thought-provoking; you’ll become riveted to the music as you hang on each and every word. Production-wise, Unbecoming is slick, at times bordering on sterile. Dallas’ vocals are soulful at times reminding me of Geoff Tate meets Ritchie Kotzen, but with a lesser register than both. My favorite tracks on Unbecoming are “Taken Alive,” a blazing tune that opens up the album firing on all cylinders, and the technically proficient “Kurukshetra.“ All in all, Unbecoming is a solid effort by an up-and-coming artist that we’ll be hearing more of down the road. The only question I have is, when will Mike Varney be calling with an offer to sign Perkins to Shrapnel Records? Until then, check out www.dallasperkins.com for everything Dallas Perkins.
